A challenge has been issued by the Kalona Public Library!

We challenge all high schoolers, aged 13 and up, to read 100 books before they graduate from high school. Sign up to tackle the challenge at the library!

If you are 13 or older and are a high school student (or the equivalent) then you are eligible to sign up to complete this challenge. High school is one of the most challenging times in a teenagers life - full of studying, tests, extracurriculars, and maintaining some kind of social life. 100 books can seem like an impossible task, but reading can lead to numerous benefits:

  • Reduces your stress and it's fun
  • Stimulates your mind and develops your imagination
  • Boosts your ability to focus and concentrate
  • Improves your vocabulary, analytical skills, and comprehension
  • Strengthens your writing skills

In order to complete the challenge successfully, you need to read and log 100 different books AND write 4 book reviews. Book reviews need to be 5 complete sentences or more to count towards the challange! Tell us your thoughts about the book. What worked for it? What didn't? What made you like or hate certain characters? Would you recommend this book to your friends?

The challenge is broken down into four benchmarks: 25 Books, 50 Books, 75 Books, and 100 Books. Each benchmark needs to have 25 books logged and 1 book review completed to move onto the next. At the completion of each benchmark participants will hand in their logs and reviews, recieve the materials for the next benchmark, and have the opportunity to add their names to the corresponding benchmark numbers in the Teen Area. All challenge graduates will be able to choose a book from the Young Adult section to place a commemorative book plate in. There will also be an annual ceremony for all challenge graduates!
